Kaustuv DeBiswas |
CoFounder
is a TED Fellow (2011), a PhD candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the managing partner at dplay. He brings core understanding of the design technology space and vision of the future grounds for development in the same. Leveraging his expertise in technology, Kaustuv has previously been a consultant/advisor to several international architectural practices like morphosis, Norman Fosters and dECOi integrating state of the art computation in their work flow. He has worked closely with the Smartgeometry group for several years introducing parametric technologies to professionals from all around the world. Previously he has been a research associate at Bentley Systems, where he was instrumental in integrating environmental performance analysis features with Generative Components, a leading parametric design tool. His collaborative work with MVRDV on a democratic urban planning platform radicalizes the politic and process of design and has been exhibited in Rotterdam (2007) and Venice (2008) Biennale. His belief in the importance of community has led him to create successful idea sharing forums at MIT, and mentor thesis students at MIT, Stanford University, and Jadavpur University (India).
Nitin Rao |
CoFounder
is a TED Fellow (2009), an MBA Candidate at the MIT Sloan School of Management and a Fellow of Sandbox, an international network of under 30 achievers. Nitin brings firsthand startup experience in India across sectors: building spinouts at SKS Microfinance including a chain of 16 rural schools, founding E4SI which sourced top talent for 40+ projects at 13 early stage startups, founding Let Me Know which shared 3500+ opportunities with students in 150 Indian cities, founding Surathkal Innovation Challenge which spun out two tech companies, and helping build People 1st Consulting which trained 3000+ executives from 80 companies. Nitin also served as the first external Staff Writer for NextBillion.net analyzing businesses in the $1T+ "base of the pyramid" market. He serves as an advisor to social enterprises: Milaap (at IIMB; increasing access to basic services in rural India), Bharat Calling (increasing college application and acceptance rates in low literacy districts), and Mental Health India.
Somnath Ray |
CoFounder | Design Director
is a graduate from Columbia University, New York and the Design Computation Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge (MIT) + Media lab. As the design director of dplay, Ray guides and orchestrates the design explorations between the several collaborators/players. His areas of interest and inquiry involve the production of cultural artifacts from an inventive condition, which he profoundly believes is to be inevitably located outside of the entire human epistemological experience and instead in an emerging wave of artificial and alternative intelligences. Ray's creative work and research into emergent and autonomous systems entails a paradigmatic meld between philosophy, art and technology. Previously , Ray has worked with the Michael Sorkin studio in New York, the Frederick Schwartz group in New York and the Mobile Experience Lab at MIT in Cambridge. Ray has also worked closely with The Smart Cities group, at the Media Lab directed by the late Prof. WIlliam Mitchell on the City Car project and with Charles Correa towards the re-envisioning a future of Urban Mobility in Bangalore, India. Winner of the 2007 international skyscraper design competition, Ray has also been a member of several design reviews and juries at the Columbia University and at the Pratt institute in New York. Ray's works have been published and exhibited in NewYork, Boston and NewDelhi.
Rajat Sodhi |
Design Associate
is a graduate from the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London where he studied Parametric Urbanism at the AA Design Research Lab and the AA Diploma. At the AA he participated in the design and construction of the [C] Space DRL10 Pavilion and has exhibited his work at the AA and node.london. He has taught workshops and reviewed juries at the AA and University of Westminster. As an Advanced Computational Geometry designer, he worked with Foster+Partners in London and Herzog & de Meuron in Germany and collaborated with The OR Project, biothing and IJP Corporation.
Prabhat Mahapatra |
Senior Designer
is a graduate from the Industrial Design Center at IIT Bombay with specialisation in Product Design. He has been involved in the design development of over 40 products in different markets, ranging from chilli holders for the Indian dining table to electric scooters for the Indian youth. At dplay Prabhat brings his expertise in fabrication and manufacturing.
Trushit Vyas |
Senior Designer
is a graduate from Pratt Institute, New York with a Master of Science in Architecture. At dplay, Trushit will extend his core expertise in design development and play a significant role in overseeing projects at the conceptual /execution phase. He is the author of the book, 'Hybrid Modernity of Adaptive Bodies, Confrontation of Hybrid Programs in Financial District, NYC'. His philosophy and inspiration of design is a speculative debate and experimental architectural production at the intersection of computation research, digital design and technological innovations. He hopes to extend the dplay agenda of experimentation and play in design through an inquiry of concepts, forms, models, methodologies at the digital front.
